The production process of rock wool is centered on melting natural rocks and other raw materials at high temperatures, subjecting them to fiberization, and then adding binders to produce the final products. The whole process is divided into key stages such as raw material preparation, melting, fiberization, forming, curing, and post-processing, with specific steps as follows:

  1. Raw material preparation and proportioning The main raw materials of rock wool are natural rocks such as basalt and diabase, supplemented by auxiliary materials like dolomite and quartz sand. First, the raw materials are crushed into particles with a required particle size (generally less than 10mm), and then mixed in precise proportions according to the product performance requirements to ensure that the composition and viscosity of the melt after melting meet the fiberization standards.
  2. Raw material melting The mixed raw materials are fed into a cupola or electric arc furnace for heating and melting, with the temperature inside the furnace reaching 1450℃-1600℃. Under the action of high temperature, the raw materials are gradually melted into a uniform magma-like melt. During this process, the temperature and melting time must be strictly controlled to avoid agglomeration or uneven composition of the melt.
  3. Fiberization treatment The molten melt flows out from the nozzle at the bottom of the furnace and falls onto a high-speed rotating centrifugal roller (the rotating speed of the centrifugal roller can reach several thousand revolutions per minute). Under the action of centrifugal force, the melt is drawn into continuous vitreous fibers with a diameter of several microns. At the same time, high-pressure air or steam is ejected from the side to further refine the fibers and form them into flocculent rock wool fiber bundles. This step is crucial for determining the quality of rock wool fibers.
  4. Gluing and cotton collection During the transportation of rock wool fibers, binders such as phenolic resin, as well as additives like waterproofing agents and dust-proof oil (selected according to product usage), are evenly sprayed on them. Subsequently, the fibers with binders are gathered on a cotton collecting belt or air duct through negative pressure adsorption or mechanical transportation to form a uniform fiber layer (cotton felt).
  5. Forming and curing The fiber layer after cotton collection is sent to a forming machine, where the thickness and density are adjusted by pressure rollers to form a preliminary blank of rock wool board, rock wool pipe or rock wool felt. Then the blank is sent to a curing furnace and baked at a temperature of 200℃-250℃, which makes the binder undergo a cross-linking reaction and cure, enabling the rock wool products to obtain a stable shape and physical properties. The curing time is usually a few minutes to more than ten minutes.
  6. Post-processing procedures After curing, the rock wool products are first cooled down, then cut and trimmed according to requirements to be processed into products of different specifications such as boards, pipe shells and roll felts; some products are also subjected to veneering treatment (such as compound aluminum foil and color steel plates) to improve moisture-proof, thermal insulation or decorative performance; finally, after quality inspection, qualified products are packaged and put into storage.
